How the Clothing Size Finder Works

Instead of guessing your size from the label on clothes you already own, the Clothing Size Finder works from your body measurements. Choose your gender and clothing type, pick whether you are entering centimetres or inches, then add the measurements the tool asks for.

The finder converts inches to centimetres internally, then compares each measurement against generic sizing ranges to find the closest match. It returns a recommended size across AU, UK, US and EU, along with an alpha size (XS, S, M, L and so on) where relevant. Because sizing is brand-dependent, treat the result as a guide and always compare against the retailer’s own size chart.

How to Measure Your Body

Accurate measurements give the best results. Use a soft tape measure, keep it level and snug without pulling it tight, and measure over light clothing or bare skin.

  • Bust / chest: measure around the fullest part of your bust or chest, keeping the tape level across your back.
  • Waist: measure around the narrowest part of your waist, usually just above the belly button.
  • Hips: measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, with your feet together.

AU, UK, US and EU Clothing Sizes Explained

For women’s clothing, AU and UK sizes usually share the same numbers, so an AU 12 is generally a UK 12. US women’s sizesare typically lower – often around four numbers below the AU/UK figure, so an AU 12 is roughly a US 8.

EU sizinguses a completely different numbering system. Women’s EU sizes generally run from about 32 to 52, climbing in steps of two, while men’s clothing uses its own EU scale. Men’s pants are often labelled by waist measurement – in inches in AU, UK and US markets, and in centimetres in much of Europe.

Why Clothing Sizes Vary Between Brands

Even within one country, two garments labelled the same size can fit very differently. Vanity sizing is a major reason: many brands assign smaller-sounding numbers to larger measurements so customers feel good about the size they buy, which means a size 10 in one label may equal a 12 in another.

Fit philosophy also varies. Some brands cut slim, athletic or tailored shapes while others are relaxed or oversized. Fabric matters too – a stretchy knit forgives a lot more than rigid denim or a structured woven fabric – and different garment cuts change how the same size sits on your body. This is exactly why measuring your body gives a more reliable starting point than the label.

Jeans and Pants Size Guidance

For jeans and pants, your waist and hip measurements matter more than a labelled size. A men’s size 32, for example, is built around roughly a 32-inch (about 81 cm) waist, so measuring your waist directly and matching it usually gives a better fit than relying on S/M/L labels.

If your waist and hips fall into different sizes – common for many body shapes – the finder recommends the larger size, since it is easier to take in a waistband than to add room through the hips. Keep in mind that stretch denim can fit smaller or larger than the stated waist once worn.

Tips for Buying Clothes Online

Online shopping removes the change room, so a little preparation goes a long way. Always open the retailer’s own size guide and compare it against your body measurements rather than assuming your usual size carries across.

Read customer reviews, which often note whether an item runs small, large or true to size, and pay attention to the fabric – stretch content changes the fit significantly. Finally, check the return and exchange policy before ordering, so you can swap sizes easily if the fit is not quite right.
